Is Your Home Truly Protected? Most Homeowners Still Aren’t Taking Key Safety Steps

As severe weather events become more common across the U.S., the need for greater home protection is more urgent than ever. But a new report from The Hanover Insurance Group reveals a troubling gap between awareness and action among American homeowners.

While many are well aware of the risks—like water damage, wind, hail, and fire—too few are taking the necessary steps to actually safeguard their homes. In particular, with the report showing that roof damage makes up 70–90% of residential losses during major weather events, homeowners need to act to install stronger roofs.

Knowing Isn’t Enough: The Action Gap

The report, based on a survey of over 1,100 homeowners conducted by The Harris Poll, highlights a widespread issue: homeowners know about risk-reducing technologies and upgrades, but most haven’t acted on that knowledge.

  • 79% of homeowners are aware of water sensors
  • 76% know about automatic water shutoff devices

Yet only 16% have installed sensors and a mere 13% have shutoff systems in place.

Fortified Roofs and Wind Protection: The Underused Safeguards

When it comes to storm resilience, homeowners are showing some awareness but very little follow-through:

  • 61% know about fortified roofing systems
  • 59% are aware of wind-rated garage doors

But only 17% have upgraded their roofs, and just 10% have installed storm-rated garages.

This is a big concern. Roof damage makes up an estimated 70% to 90% of residential losses during catastrophic weather events, the report states.

Small Habits, Big Protection Gains

There’s some good news. More homeowners are performing basic but vital upkeep:

  • Roof inspections jumped from 38% to 57% over the past year
  • Tree trimming is on the rise—important since falling limbs cause 20% of wind and hail claims
  • 62% cleaned dryer vents and 57% serviced HVAC filters in the past year

These habits can prevent costly claims and reduce fire risks.

Fire: The Costliest and Most Preventable Threat

Fire remains one of the most expensive risks for homeowners, with average claims exceeding $75,000.

  • 99% of homeowners are educated on smoke detectors
  • 97% understand the value of fire alarms
Still, only 67% say they’ve actually installed smoke detectors.

Key Risk Stats from the Report

  • 1 in 60 homeowners will experience a water damage loss each year
  • 1 in 35 will file a wind or hail damage claim
  • Roof damage makes up 70–90% of residential losses during major weather events

Sponsored by Hancock Claims Consultants, this report underscores how crucial it is to turn awareness into action. The upgrades may seem small, but in a severe storm or emergency, they can make the difference between a quick recovery and a massive financial hit.

Takeaway: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

If you’ve been meaning to install a water sensor, upgrade your roof, or upgrade your smoke detectors—consider this your sign. It’s not just about protecting your home; it’s about protecting your peace of mind.
